Those in a position of power at La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid maintain a strong interest in the services of Benfica star Álvaro Carreras.

That’s according to The Athletic, who have on Tuesday provided an insight into the latest developments behind the scenes at the Santiago Bernabéu.

The name of defender Carreras has of course long proven a prominent one in the headlines in Spain’s capital.

This comes after widespread confirmation was forthcoming earlier this summer that the 22-year-old has been earmarked as the ideal profile to fill the left flank in Xabi Alonso’s squad.

Negotiations, in turn, were kicked into gear with Benfica, albeit with common ground having proven difficult to come by.

As alluded to above, though, if the latest word stemming from the media on Tuesday is anything to go by, Real Madrid’s interest in Carreras’ signature remains as strong as ever.

As per a report from The Athletic:

‘Benfica’s Alvaro Carreras remains Madrid’s top choice for left-back, despite Fran Garcia having a fine Club World Cup.’
