The Champions League winners and the Europa League winners travelled to Helsinki for the annual curtain-raiser to the European season.

Carlo Ancelotti named exactly the same XI to the one that beat Liverpool in the Champions League final three months ago, whilst Frankfurt were without the Juventus-bound Filip Kostić.

It was Los Blancos who had a monopoly on possession in the early exchanges but chances were hard to come by with the German outfit starting with a compact, low block.

But it was actually Frankfurt who had the first real chance of the game as Daichi Kamada raced through on goal after poor defending but fired his effort straight at Thibaut Courtois.

But right up the other end it was almost the Spanish giants who opened the scoring as Vinicius Jnr had a close range shot cleared brilliantly off the line by Tuta.

Eventually Madrid’s pressure told as David Alaba reacted quickest to a loose ball in the box and tapped into an empty net.

Into the second half and despite Frankfurt trying to play between the Blancos lines it was clear that a gulf in class was showing between these two teams.

There was almost a second goal on the hour mark as Casemiro found some space on the edge of the area but crashed his effort back off the crossbar.

A second goal did come on 65 minutes as Karim Benzema hit a first time effort past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
