Real Madrid’s defensive woes continue to mount as one player after another keeps getting injured.

Following the injuries to Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao, youngster Jacobo Ramon is also out with muscular problems, which has complicated Carlo Ancelotti’s situation with his defensive options.

While David Alaba’s recovery would provide some relief, his return to the pitch is still some time away.

Alaba to return in January 2025

While reports suggested that Alaba could be closing in on a return, the situation is not as simple as it seems.

Indeed, according to journalist Rodra P (h/t Madrid Zone), the Austrian defender is unlikely to return to action for Real Madrid until January 2025.

Alaba has been out of action since December 17, 2023, when the Austrian footballer suffered an ACL injury at the Santiago Bernabeu against Villarreal.

Alaba is continuing his solitary training regime at Valdebebas. He has already missed half of the previous season and the European Championship in Germany. While October was initially targeted for his return to full competition, that timeline has been extended.

The current plan for the former Bayern Munich man is to resume playing with Real Madrid in January, coinciding with the opening of the winter transfer window, during which the club currently has no plans for any movements.

It would mean that Alaba will have been sidelined for thirteen months – more than a full year away from the team.

Alaba’s recent weeks at Real Madrid’s training facility have shown promising signs. He appears to be in better condition and is beginning to regain his form, though he still needs about two months before returning to elite-level football.

The Spanish giants value his presence, and he continues to demonstrate professionalism in his recovery.

For Ancelotti, Alaba’s role is crucial to the team, especially now given the defensive shortage. While Real Madrid are avoiding any risks with his comeback, they are also eager to have him return as soon as possible. But, for now, his expected return is set for early 2025.
