Journalist Jorge Picon has confirmed that Andriy Lunin’s recent performances have more or less assured his continuity at Real Madrid.

Lunin’s progress this season has been commendable, to say the very least. Only a few months ago, the Ukrainian was expected to depart but fast forward to the date and he is now a cult hero, having played a heroic role in the recent quarter-final against Manchester City.

After Real Madrid had lost Thibaut Courtois to injury, the team from the Spanish capital was quick to rope in Kepa Arrizabalaga on loan for the rest of the season.

Things looked pretty bleak for the Ukrainian as his Spanish counterpart enjoyed a run in the starting XI.

But after Kepa was forced out due to untimely injury, Lunin stayed calm and made the first-team place his own. He began putting in impressive performances and even after Kepa returned, he remained on the field.

Lunin’s contract renewal is on the card

In the upcoming weeks, Lunin’s fate will be settled, and all signs point towards one outcome: a contract renewal.

Once uncertain about staying with the team or leaving, the player now has a clear desire to remain for years to come, according to those familiar with his intentions.

This sentiment is reciprocated by the leadership at the club, who have always supported him. Consequently, as the sporting situation settles, news regarding the contract renewal is expected to surface soon and everything appears to be progressing smoothly in that regard.

Meanwhile, the recovery of Courtois from his recent surgery raises questions about his future role.

The coaching staff eagerly anticipates his return, even appreciating his participation in the recent match in its entirety.

However, they did not anticipate Lunin emerging as a hero in Courtois’ absence. While it may be too soon for Courtois to return for the semi-finals, Ancelotti and his team are confident in Lunin’s abilities as a reliable substitute.
