Tickets for Olympique Lyonnais’ clash with Beşiktaş in the Europa League tomorrow evening have been limited by the French club. According to a report by L’Équipe, the upper tier of the stadium will be closed and the attendance will be restricted to 30,000, with the club stating that they have “chosen to prioritise safety over profit.”
The French authorities and Lyon have been keen to avoid a repeat of the events that occurred in 2017 when these two teams last met. The match was heavily delayed after both sets of supporters threw projectiles (firecrackers and flares) at one another in the north stand.
From Wednesday the 23rd of October until Friday the the 25th, Beşiktaş fans are under a travel ban and will be prevented from attending the stadium, congregating in the city centre, or using any transport links in the region (such as train stations, airports, or toll booths).
However, the French paper writes that the authorities are concerned that this ban will be ignored leading to Lyon taking more drastic steps to limit the number of tickets that are sold and who the tickets are sold to, with the club completely banning ticket resales.
On social media, the two ultras groups have taunted one another. Last month a group with links to the Turkish club released a banner stating “Are you ready Lyon ultras? Round 2?” leading to a back and forth between the rival supporters.
