Reading boss Paul Ince has taken aim at Manchester United after he was not invited to have a drink with Erik ten Hag or his staff after their FA Cup tie.

The Championship side were beaten 3-1 by the Red Devils in the fourth round tie at Old Trafford last weekend.

Ince’s side battled hard and kept the game goalless for nearly an hour but three goals in 12 minutes – a Casemiro brace and then one for Fred – took the game away from them.

Amadou Mbengue’s 72nd-minute goal gave the travelling Royals fans something to celebrate but was just a consolation in the end as the hosts booked their place in the fifth round of the competition.

The game saw Ince, a former United player, return to the Theatre of Dreams but it appears he was left with a bitter taste in his mouth after not being invited for a drink with any of ten Hag’s staff afterwards.

He took aim at the Premier League club in an interview with the Daily Mail.

Ince said: “I went straight up to see Sir Alex because I got a text from him afterwards to say ‘come up and see me’, he said speaking ahead of the clash with Watford on Saturday.

“So myself, my wife and Thomas (Ince) went up there and spent an hour with him. It disappointed me because none of the United staff asked me in for a glass of wine. I didn’t like that, it’s a lack of respect.

“Whoever it is, win, lose or draw, you say pop in for a drink. Whether it’s wine or tea it doesn’t really matter.

“None of their staff did that so that was disappointing. I couldn’t give a monkeys but I just pride it on myself, as a manager, whether or not you get beaten, you say come in for a glass of wine.”

Reading are back in Championship action this weekend as they host Watford at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

The Verdict

You can understand Ince’s frustration as it doesn’t seem as though he has been offered the same treatment as previous visiting managers at Old Trafford.

He’s not been afraid to vent his frustration and his comments promise to prove somewhat controversial among fans of his former club.

Ince is a divisive figure in the minds of many United fans given the way his playing days ended there and his subsequent move to Liverpool.

This saga is unlikely to change that.
