Spurs tabled a bid yesterday once it was clear he was keen on joining them.

Chelsea were also keen on the former Paris Saint-Germain attacker, but they did not make an offer for him.

The Lilywhites have been dealt a couple of blows in their attempt to strengthen in the final third this summer.

They missed out on a deal for Morgan Gibbs-White, who opted to remain at Nottingham Forest.

Eberechi Eze also came close to moving to Tottenham but has since joined Arsenal from Crystal Palace after the deal was hijacked.

James Maddison is out for a large chunk of the season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in pre-season.

Dejan Kulusevski has yet to return, having been out of action since May due to a knee injury.

Simons will be desperate to hit the ground running at Spurs after being linked with a move to the Premier League before he turned professional.

Tottenham are back in action on Saturday when they host Bournemouth, and they will be looking to continue their perfect start to the campaign following victories over Burnley and Manchester City.

Simons is unlikely to be registered on time for the game and will be unable to make his Premier League debut this weekend.

They are back in action next month with a trip to the London Stadium to take on struggling West Ham United on September 13.
