Rayo Vallecano understand the commercial opportunities that can come with signing a world-renowned veteran, and this tactic worked well with the 2021 signing of Radamel Falcao.
Now the club are looking to do something similar with one of his fellow countrymen, according to reports from Relevo.
The man in question is former Real Madrid star James Rodríguez, who most recently put in some solid performances for Colombia at the Copa America, as his side lost in the final against Argentina.
The main barrier for a move would be the 33-year-old’s high salary, although Rayo Vallecano could seek out the same solution they did with Falcao, where they received support from sponsors in Colombia to make the move happen.
The player himself hinted at a return to Spain last March, by saying: “Hopefully in the future, I can return to La Liga. It’s a league I have always wanted to play in.”
The arrival of such a high-profile international star makes a partnership with Rayo an attractive prospect for sponsors in the South American country, meaning this move is not as much of a long shot as it may seem.
It is likely that any transfer would be completed for free, meaning Rayo would only have to focus on covering the star’s wages.
James also has experience living in the Spanish capital during his time at Real Madrid, meaning this move could also be attractive to the player.
