Rayo Vallecano pulled off a shock on Monday as they consigned Real Madrid to their first defeat of their La Liga season.
The home side triumphed 3-2 during an enthralling match at Estadio de Vallecas.
Rayo took the lead after just five minutes when Sati Comesana volleyed past Thibaut Courtois in the Real Madrid goal.
What a start.
However, Carlo Ancelotti’s side were level when Luka Modric equalised from the penalty spot. And it appeared to be normal service resumed minutes later when Eder Militao headed home in the 41st minute to put Real Madrid 2-1 ahead.
But it was a lead they couldn’t hold onto before half time as Alvaro Garcia equalised before the break.
Real Madrid would surely come out stronger in the second half and make their quality count.
However, that wasn’t quite the case as Rayo more than held their own.
And then, in the 67th minute, Oscar Trejo slotted home a penalty at the second time of asking.
Could the home side hold on for the remaining 20 minutes or so?
Well, Real threw the kitchen sink at their opponents and pushed hard to maintain their unbeaten record.
In the final seconds of injury time, they forced a corner and Courtois came up to attack it.
But the set-piece ended up with Fede Valverde – who has one of the best shots in world football – smashing the ball into the balcony of some Rayo Vallecano fans! Unsurprisingly, they didn’t give the ball back as the supporters inside the stadium absolutely loved it.
Now, the ball appears to be on sale online for €200 with the message: “Fede Valverde just hit this ball into my house. It is a little dented from when it hit the house but it can be used.”
Brilliant.
The result for Real leaves them two points behind Barcelona at the top of La Liga, with the table toppers playing Osasuna tonight.
Meanwhile, Rayo have now won three consecutive matches and are up to 8th in the table. They are just three points behind Atletico Madrid in third as their fantastic campaign continues.
After the loss, Ancelotti admitted that he perhaps got Real’s tactics wrong.
“I think it’s quite easy to analyse,” Ancelotti said. “We lacked the punch that the opponents had. Our level in that sense was lower and, when that happens, you can’t just rely on your talent.
“It wasn’t just a physical issue. Maybe the tactics weren’t the best. For example, we struggled to bring the ball out and sometimes we need to play long balls in certain situations. So, maybe I, as the coach, made a mistake with that. We also lost a lot of duels. That was the case with all the players, even those who normally win their duels.”
