With the victory, Rayados will head to the UAE to participate in the 2021 Club World Cup, joining the likes of Chelsea, Al Jazira (UAE), Auckland City (New Zealand), and Al Ahly (Egypt) to determine the best club in world football.

Rogelio Funes Mori scored the opening goal of the match just nine minutes into the match when Sebastián Cáceres missed a routine clearance, allowing the Rayados striker to pass the ball into the net from six yards out.

Though América came into the match with a ton of momentum, having already clinched the top seed in the upcoming Liguilla, they hardly ever threatened the Rayados goal, managing their best chance in the first half from a free-kick.

Rayados had several chances to extend their lead as they were far and away the better side on the night.

Towards the 80-minute mark, former Tottenham striker Vincent Janssen had a golden opportunity to put the match to bed but couldn’t take full advantage of another América defensive mishap.

With the last kick of the match, in the 100th minute, América came agonisingly close to the equaliser, with Federico Viñas hitting the crossbar.

Following a lengthy VAR review for a potential handball, the match official said Maxi Meza did not handle the ball and blew the full-time whistle, giving Monterrey their record fifth Concacaf Champions League trophy.

There has yet to be an exact date determined for the Club World Cup but it’s set to take place in ‘early 2022’.
