58 days after Bayern Munich lifted the trophy in Lisbon – Champions League football has finally returned to our lives!
Matchday One saw Barcelona, Manchester United and Juventus all in action.
Here’s what went down …
Scorers: Martial (og) 55′; Fernandes (pen) 23′, Rashford 87′
Manchester United enjoyed another successful night in Paris after beating PSG 2-1 at the Parc des Princes.
United took the lead through Bruno Fernandes – who saw his initial penalty saved by Keylor Navas – only to score the re-take after the Costa Rican edged off his line.
David de Gea then made a superb stop from Kylian Mbappé, before Anthony Martial headed into his own net from a corner.
But it was the visitors who finished strongest and Marcus Rashford fired a brilliant late strike past Keylor Navas to secure victory.
Scorers: Messi (pen) 27′, Fati 43′, Coutinho 52′, Pedri 82′, Dembélé 90′; Kharatin 70′
Barcelona cruised to a comfortable victory after beating underdogs Ferencváros 5-1 at Camp Nou.
After the visitors hit the bar early on, Lionel Messi earned a penalty after slaloming into the box, before scoring from 12 yards himself.
Ansu Fati then doubled their lead, before Philippe Coutinho made it three shortly after half-time.
Gerard Piqúe was later shown a straight red card for pulling down Tokmac Nguen as last man – with Igor Kharatin scoring the resulting penalty.
17-year-old playmaker Pedri made it 4-1 late on, with Dembélé scoring as well to make it five.
Scorers: N/A
Chelsea and Sevilla shared the spoils in their Group E opener after drawing 0-0 at Stamford Bridge.
Chances were at a premium throughout, but Édouard Mendy made a smart first-half save after Kurt Zouma sliced his clearance straight to Lucas Ocampos.
Chelsea woke up in the second half and tested Sevilla keeper Bono, who stopped strikes from Timo Werner and Kai Havertz comfortably.
The visitors will be far happier with their night’s work.
Scorers: Immobile 6′, Hitz (og) 23′, Akpa-Akpro 76′; Haaland 71′
Lazio ended their horrendous European run against German sides with a 3-1 win over Borussia Dortmund in Rome.
Former Dortmund striker Ciro Immobile opened the scoring after just six minutes, after Joaquin Correa took advantage of some poor passing in defence.
The hosts then doubled their lead after goalkeeper Marwin Hitz inadvertently pushed a Luiz Felipe header into his own net.
Erling Haaland blasted home to give Dortmund some late hope, before Jean-Daniel Akpa Akpro made it 3-1 to secure victory.
Scorers: Angeliño 10′, 16′
RB Leipzig enjoyed a winning start to their Champions League campaign after beating Istanbul Basaksehir 2-0 at the Red Bull Arena.
Angeliño opened the scoring with a beautiful turn and finish, before adding his second minutes later with another accomplished strike.
Scorers: Guirassy (pen) 56′; Ramírez 59′
Rennes were denied a historic night after drawing 1-1 against Krasnodar in their their first ever Champions League fixture.
Serhou Guirassy scored the opening goal, firing home from 12 yards after Martin Terrier was fouled by Yegor Sorokin.
But just minutes later, Cristian Ramírez scored a stunning left-footed strike to silence the Roazhon Park crowd.
Scorers: Morata 46′, 84′
Juventus started their Champions League campaign with three points after beating Dynamo Kyiv 2-0 in Ukraine.
The Bianconeri created two good first-half chances, but Federico Chiesa and Dejan Kulusevski both saw their efforts saved by goalkeeper Heorhiy Bushchan.
However, it took just one minute for Álvaro Morata to open the scoring after half time, reacting quickest to bury a spilled shot from Kulusevski.
Dynamo pushed for an equaliser but struggled to create any clear opportunities, before Morata grabbed his second of the game, heading home a pinpoint Juan Cuadrado cross.
Scorers: Dennis 63′, De Ketelaere 92′; Horvath (og) 74′
There was late drama after Club Brugge stunned Zenit late on to win 2-1 in St Petersburg.
After a quiet first half, the visitors went ahead when Emmanuel Dennis poked home following a chaotic penalty box scramble.
Zenit, however, equalised after Ethan Horvath put into his own net after Dejan Lovren’s long-range strike ricocheted off the post and onto his back.
There was still time for drama as 19-year-old Charles De Ketelaere finished a brilliant team move in injury time, securing all three points.
