Real Madrid may be outsiders to reach the Champions League quarter-finals but Raphaël Varane is insistent that they can do it.

His side trail Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City 2-1 ahead of their second leg at the Etihad next month, which they will be without influential captain Sergio Ramos for through suspension.

Despite the difficulty of the task ahead of them, the LaLiga winners are preparing to pull off a surprise.

“This is Real Madrid and at this club, anything is possible,” Varane told French outlet Le Parisien.

“Even if the situation is difficult, the hope is always there. When you wear this shirt, you have a responsibility.

“We know a difficult game awaits us but we’re going to approach it with incredible hunger.

The 27-year-old is also one of the few who have taken up the surprise position that Karim Benzema’s heroic campaign is actually not the best of his career.

“I wouldn’t say that the last season has been the best season of his career,” added the defender.

“But that’s only because I’ve known him a long time. I am just glad to see him so radiant and happy now.

“He’s really taken on the responsibility and assumed his role as leader of the attack.”
