Rangers: there’s a big problem with Connor Goldson’s move to Birmingham

Rangers could finally be set to be free of Connor Goldson at long last, after Birmingham made a move on the 31-year-old, but there’s a huge catch:

They can’t afford his £40,000pw wage.

With their best-paid player said to be Croatia’s Ivan Šunjić at around £20,000 max, it’s unclear how a-now League One club (Brum were relegated last campaign) could afford Rangers’ highest-paid player, with the same problem afflicting the club with Sam Lammers as well.

Indeed, financially the move is a total non-starter – Goldson would have to take a massive 50% wage cut on his (already ludicrous) Rangers salary, going down to £20K and even then he’d still be the best-paid player in League One.

Logistically this move seems impossible.

Obviously we’d love it to happen, somehow – some kind of addons deal perhaps where he can be paid the extra in bonuses or something, we couldn’t even guess.

But the point is on face value it appears extremely lazy journalism based on the fact Goldson was born two minutes away from Birmingham in Wolverhampton, and there’s no way Premier League Wolves would be making a move on him.

But hey, it’s not completely impossible because crazy things do happen in football, and there’s barely a soul in the Rangers support making a case any more for Goldson to stay.

Watch this space.
