FLW’s Birmingham City fan pundit is excited by the prospect of the club signing Rangers defender Connor Goldson this summer.

According to The Scottish Sun, Chris Davies is keen on signing the 31-year-old as part of the Blues’ transfer plans.

The Midlands outfit is aiming to build a team capable of fighting for promotion back to the Championship at the first attempt.

Goldson has recently fallen out of favour at Ibrox, so could be open to a move to St. Andrew’s despite having two years remaining on his current deal.

The centre-back featured in 30 of the team’s 38 league games last season, before a knee injury ended any chances of him returning to Philippe Clement’s side (all stats from Fbref).

Goldson signing would be welcome at Birmingham

FLW’s Birmingham fan pundit Mike Gibbs believes that Goldson would be a really strong addition to Davies’ side this summer.

However, he remains sceptical that a deal can be agreed just yet given the number of big name signings the club has already been linked with this summer.

“I think Connor Goldson would be a massive coup,” Gibbs told Football League World.

“Played 48 times for Rangers, think he’s 30 now, so he’s got a good few years ahead of him at a good level.

“I think if you were to bring him in alongside [Mike] Eerdhuijzen, I think that gives us a really, really strong central defensive mix of players.

“Whether it’s realistic or not, who knows? There’s been a lot of rumours so far that you’d think would be out of reach of a League One club coming to Birmingham, but we haven’t seen many of those getting over the line yet.

“Until the link is dry on the contract, I think the jury is out to be brutally honest.

“That being said, if you look at the two goalkeepers we brought in, both are at least Championship quality, so we’re doing exactly what Garry Cook said, building a team capable of competing in the Championship within League One.”

Connor Goldson's importance to Rangers

Goldson has spent seven years with Rangers, and has been a key figure in the first team squad during that time.

He was a regular presence in the side when the club won the Scottish league title under Steven Gerrard in 2021.

The defender has also earned experience playing in European football, including the Champions League and the Europa League.

But his time with Rangers could be coming to an end very soon, with Birmingham eyeing a potential move.

Goldson signing could be promising

Goldson’s age is a slight concern, as at 31 he will now start to see a decline in his physical performance.

With that in mind, Birmingham should avoid spending too much in any transfer agreement with Rangers.

If they can keep costs low, then his arrival could be promising for Davies’ side next season.

The veteran centre-back will bring a lot of valuable experience to a League One side, and should help the Blues quite a lot in their bid for automatic promotion.
