If a report from Vamos Mi Sevilla is believed to be true, Rangers striking ace Alfredo Morelos has penned a pre-contract agreement with Sevilla ahead of a potential Bosman move. With his Ibrox deal set to expire at the closure of the current campaign, the Colombian is gearing up for a fresh challenge after a remarkable spell in Scottish football.

The 26-year-old hitman progressed through the academy ranks of Independiente Medellín back in his homeland. He initially struggled at their senior setup, but a loan spell with HJK saw him drawing the attention of the scouts in attendance. The Finnish side made his loan move permanent and the attacker, too, maintained his blistering scoring record before completing a £1m transfer to Rangers in the summer of 2017.

Morelos was a rare success during Pedro Caixinha’s dreadful managerial stint. He eventually hit the peak under Steven Gerrard and played a massive role in their 2020-21 Premiership triumph. Although he has often been criticized for attitude and disciplinary issues, his flair and finesse high up the pitch make him one of the most fearsome centre-forwards to don the Light Blues’ colours.

Alfredo Morelos

Despite scoring 122 goals and assisting 57 times in 260 appearances, Morelos has been struggling of late due to form and fitness reasons. The Gers’ leading European scorer lost his place to their summer signing Antonio Colak until the latter’s injury woe around the winter break. So far he has netted 10 times in 36 outings across competitions, however, Colak has been more productive with 17 goals in 34 games while spearheading the attack.

Why His Exit Would Be A Setback For Rangers

Having said that, Morelos’ exit will be a significant blow for the Glasgow giants. New boss Michael Beale is working towards scripting a transition following the disappointing tenure of Giovanni van Bronckhorst, but he needs both depth and quality across the pitch to draw an end to Celtic’s domestic dominance under Ange Postecolgou.

Rangers also have Kemar Roofe in their ranks who has exhibited his versatility across the frontline. He has scored some crucial goals, but the persistent injury problems have refrained his minutes over the past couple of years. The Jamaican still has a year left in his contract beyond this season, but the gaffer must opt for an attacking reinforcement to find a replacement for Morelos.

Colak, nevertheless, has done enough to cement his starting status. In-form Fashion Sakala is being deployed as a second striker in a tweaked 4-3-1-2 formation, yet they need someone to challenge and cover the current options. It remains to be seen how things shape up for the Gers in the upcoming summer window.
