Rangers are ready to add to their £1.6million bill for paying up contracted players by terminating Eduardo Herrera’s deal, Football Insider understands.

The Mexican striker has been an expensive mistake for the Light Blues since he was signed for £1.5million in the summer of 2017 by ex-manager Pedro Caixinha.

Ibrox sources have told Football Insider that the club are willing to hold talks with Herrera’s camp by paying up some of the last six months of his contract, which expires next summer.

Herrera joined Mexican outfit Club Necaxa on loan in January in a deal that was extended in July until the end of December.

He has scored three goals in 13 appearances this season but started only one league match and faces the prospect of a January return to Ibrox.

However, there is no way back into Steven Gerrard’s side and Rangers are willing to explore paying up a portion of the cash that will be remaining on the final six months of his £20,000-a-week contract.

The advantage for the striker, 31, would be that he would then be a free agent and able to join a new club without requiring a transfer fee.

Rangers revealed in their financial results published last Friday they had spent £1.6million on paying up contracts of players for the year ending June 2019.

The most notable of these was Herrera’s fellow Mexican flop, Carlos Pena, whose deal was terminated in February with 16 months remaining on his original three-year contract.

Herrara scored just two goals in 24 Rangers appearances during his season at the club before being twice loaned out last season, to Santos  Laguna in the first half of the campaign and then at Club Necaxa in the new year.
