Trio Of Major Rangers Legends Give Russell Martin Big Backing

Article image:Trio Of Major Rangers Legends Give Russell Martin Big Backing

Russell Martin may not be the name that inspires universal excitement across the Rangers support, but when you see the calibre of names giving him their time and backing, it certainly softens the scepticism. A recent visit from Sir Alex Ferguson and John Greig (and Richard Gough) has raised eyebrows, but in the best way possible. While not every Rangers fan agrees with Martin’s appointment, even the most doubtful can appreciate the significance of having two or three icons around the squad. It echoes the early days of Steven Gerrard’s reign when Walter Smith offered his wisdom and presence behind the scenes.

There’s something deeply powerful about having genuine Rangers legends take time to pass on their insight. Russell Martin may still have a lot to prove, but men like Ferguson and Greig do not lend themselves lightly. The message is clear – Rangers matter. And Martin, whether fans believe in him or not, has accepted that guidance. The presence of Greig, still the club’s greatest captain, alongside the managerial behemoth that is Ferguson, means the current boss is at least listening to the right people – Richard Gough too made an appearance with the manager.

Criticism has been fair. Martin’s appointment raised questions about ambition, direction and the continued obsession with players from England’s lower leagues. But no one can say that support from some of the biggest names in football is anything but a good sign. Greig and Gough know what it means to wear the shirt, and Ferguson has seen everything the game has to offer. If they are offering guidance, it is worth listening to.

The presence of these icons doesn’t mean Martin is suddenly transformed. Rangers fans are not that naïve. But the club desperately needs a strong connection to its core values and history, and those men represent exactly that. For all the modern ideas and new regimes, there is still a need for those who know what Rangers truly stands for.

No Rangers manager can succeed without understanding the weight of that badge. And while Martin is still very much in his learning curve, this sort of guidance can only help. Whether it leads to success remains to be seen. But if Russell Martin really wants to grasp the Rangers identity, having Sir Alex, Goughie and John Greig around is one hell of a start.
