Rangers POTY nominations are an interesting bunch

Rangers yesterday announced the Player of the Year nominations, and there were some interesting choices and no shock inclusions.

The names on the sheet were Jack Butland, James Tavernier, John Souttar, Abdallah Sima and John Lundstram, with a quota of five having to be filled.

We will be honest, we’re a little surprised Cyriel Dessers isn’t there, despite how unpopular he is with many fans, because his goal contributions speak for themselves.

We’re also a bit surprised Abdallah Sima is there too, because he’s missed half the season with injury – he also didn’t really get going with the goals till the PSV first leg. But we’d imagine that was a judgement call that he’s overall more popular now (in absence) than Dessers so it would be a less controversial inclusion.

Some have argued for Sterling’s inclusion, but unfortunately he only got going in November and has missed a fair chunk of football with injury. He is a great player though, even if he’s being wasted in how he’s being used most of the time.

We were also very pleased to see John Souttar get the recognition – quietly he’s been Rangers’ best defender, alongside Leon Balogun, and either of them could have got the nod, albeit the Nigerian hasn’t been regular this calendar year.

Very telling there’s no place for Connor Goldson – another horrible season from the overpaid waster, and despite Clement’s public defence of the vice-captain, the sooner Rangers can find a way to part company with this untouchable waste of a jersey, the better. Can you tell we’re not his biggest fans on Ibrox Noise?

But back to the nominees, generally they’re kind of fair, with the three obvious choices of Butland Tavernier and Lundstram in attendance, and a popular choice of Souttar. Sima is a bit more of a stretch really.

But there’s a foregone winner here, with an Ibrox Noise poll already having a miles and away clear leader at the time of writing.

Do we even need to spell out who?
