Rangers have joined the race to recruit Norwich City winger Abu Kamara.

Football Scotland, however, believes that they will need to offload players before they can recruit the Canaries' starlet, who shone at Portsmouth last season.

The 21-year-old was a prolific figure for Pompey during the 2023/24 campaign and made a real difference in the final third at Fratton Park, with his contributions helping his former loan team to secure a return to the Championship.

Although others contributed to the south-coast side's cause, Kamara was seen as a central figure to John Mousinho's side's success and many Pompey fans will be keen to see him return to the south coast.

It remains to be seen whether he makes the move back to Mousinho's side, but it does look as though he could leave Carrow Road before the end of the transfer window, having handed in a transfer request.

Norwich have already lost a few talented players this summer, with Gabriel Sara making the move to Galatasaray and Adam Idah finally securing a return to Celtic following an excellent loan spell in Glasgow for the Republic of Ireland international.

Jonathan Rowe is also set to move on, with Marseille closing in on the Englishman after seeing him enjoy a brilliant 2023/24 season.

With all of these attacking players going, Kamara, Josh Sargent and potential future signings may have to contribute a huge amount to fill the void that the likes of Rowe and Sara have created with their departures.

Idah may not have been able to fully kick on at Carrow Road, but he could have been a real asset in Norfolk during the 2024/25 campaign and beyond.

Rangers take interest in Abu Kamara

Football Scotland believes the Gers are interested in Kamara, who could be available for around £2m.

However, they face a couple of barriers in their quest to recruit the wide player.

Firstly, it has been reported that the Scottish Premiership side will need to focus on offloading players first if they are to sign the 21-year-old.

Personal terms aren't expected to be an issue if they can agree a fee, but other teams have also been linked with a move for the player, including Hull City.

With only a week left to go during the window, the Gers will need to move quickly if they want to sign Kamara, especially with the club also needing to sell players before they recruit him.

Keeping Kamara would be ideal for Norwich - because he's a talented player who should only improve considering his age.

He may have played in League One last season, but he could make the step up to the Championship fairly seamlessly.

And if he does, he could potentially be an excellent replacement for Rowe, so you could understand why the Canaries may want to keep hold of him.

However, the player seems unhappy and Johannes Hoff Thorup will only want players at Carrow Road who are committed to the cause.

It will be interesting to see what unfolds in the next week.
