Davide Ancelotti is believed to be the primary target for the vacant managerial role at Rangers after holding fresh talks in London last week.
The BBC claims the 35-year-old met with Rangers officials to outline his vision for the club, and further discussions are planned in the coming days.
Ancelotti has been engaged in a series of conversations with the Ibrox hierarchy this month. Talks have reportedly gone well, and Rangers may already be convinced that he’s the right man for the job.
Former Liverpool midfielder and Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard was being lined up for a sensational return to Ibrox, but Rangers now seem to be casting their net wider.
Since leaving Rangers, Gerrard’s stock has plummeted after flopping at Villa and Al-Etiffaq, so they’re not convinced he’s the man to end the one-sided Scottish Premiership rivalry with Celtic.
A reunion with Gerrard may be revisited, but only if negotiations with Ancelotti fall through. Rangers’ ongoing takeover saga has slowed down the process.
The search for a new manager is being led by current Chief Executive Officer Patrick Stewart and the existing board.
However, the club’s prospective new owners – an American consortium led by Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers Enterprises Global Football Group – and incoming sporting director Kevin Thelwell are also in the conversation.
Ancelotti was supposed to join his father’s coaching staff in the Brazilian national team. But those plans have changed, with the Italian now focused on stepping out on his own.
He has been his father’s wingman at Bayern Munich, Napoli, Everton and Real Madrid, but is now keen to lead a project of his own and create a long-lasting football identity.
The Italian is highly regarded at Madrid, but Rangers are running out of time to snap him up. If they don’t get it done by early June, they could miss out on a rising managerial star.
