Rangers’ Dujon Sterling rewarded with stunning Jamaica call-up

Dujon Sterling has been handed a shock Jamaica call up for the Copa America, starting in June, by way of his parents who hail from that part of the world.

The English-born utility man, 24, played for England youth up till the U20s but hadn’t received a call up at senior level, unsurprisingly, given the standard of their players since 2019, his last youth cap.

But the Jamaica call is one he is said to be very, very keen on answering, and this would eat deeply into Rangers’ preseason preparations although of course with the Euros this summer he might not be the only Rangers player away on international duty.

Philippe Clement hates international football, as a club manager – he did of course represent his own country with distinction around 40 times so he enjoyed it as a player, but as a manager a lot less, understandably.

And from his point of view losing another player this summer might be flattering to the club and the player and even the boss, but it’s not good for losing options.

Especially given how good Sterling has been since Clement came in – some might argue he’s been the biggest beneficiary under the Belgian since November, and his absence has been painfully felt recently with some less than stellar results.

So we can’t really see him saying no to this call up – it’s senior international football at a massive summer tournament, and this means Rangers will probably lose him for preseason preparation.

It’s the price for success – Ibrox Noise was whining recently about our lack of call ups.

Well this is a bit of an answer.

Sterling is seriously turning into a Rangers asset and now that’s been recognised by the country of his parents.

We’d be very, very shocked if he reported to Rangers for preseason and not the USA.
