Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst could finally axe Connor Goldson by signing Vitesse defender Danilho Doekhi this month.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent days and weeks have claimed that Goldson could be set for an exit from Ibrox with his contract currently coming to an end this summer and no new agreement in place.

Who did Rangers beat in their first game of 2021?

Celtic Aberdeen St Mirren Ross County

And, it has also been suggested that the Gers have got their sights set on Doekhi as a potential transfer target, with claims that the reigning Scottish champions could take advantage of the fact that he too has his contract expiring in the summer.

Goldson can go

Despite playing a bit part in the Gers’ title triumph last season, Goldson’s form has been questionable to say the least this year, with Alex Rae even wondering whether his contract situation is having an impact.

He said: “Whether this (the contract situation) is affecting his performances or not is difficult to say. I can only talk from my own experiences when I was kind of coming towards the end of my contract.

“It only happened once in my whole career and it most certainly affected me on and off the park. Whether it has a bearing on Connor Goldson, it is hard to say. But, what I will say, collectively the backline are passing up more opportunities than they were last year.”

It’s no surprise then that Goldson has also come under immense criticism from sections of the Rangers fan-base, with a few in particular critical of his performance just last month against Hibernian – a couple even insisted he should not be given a new contract and needed to be sold immediately.

And if Rangers were to wave goodbye to the defender, then they could do a lot worse than signing Doekhi.

His manager Thomas Letsch hailed the defender earlier last year, saying: “Danilho is extremely important. He is one of the best center-backs of the Eredivisie.

“Of course there is more talk about Oussama Tannane, Riechedly Bazoer and the attacking players. But it is very important for the team that you are stable and prevent goals. Everyone is responsible for that, but Doekhi, Jacob Rasmussen and also Tomas Hajek do a super job.

“He already played fantastic last year and this season he has performed at the highest level in every game. Danilho makes almost no mistakes and is an absolute team player, a very calm player. flat developed. He coaches other players very well. He is calmer than other players and perhaps that makes him less noticeable, but he is the reserve captain for a reason.”

Meanwhile, Dutch football agent, Freddy van der Hoorn, even recently backed Doekhi to shine in Scottish football, saying: “He came from Ajax so he’s very comfortable on the ball for being a big lad. He likes to play football from the back, you can trust him at the back.

“He’s quite aggressive and I think he’ll thrive in Scotland. He will need to adapt because it’s a different ball game from playing on the continent in terms of speed and time on the ball. Giovanni van Bronckhorst knows him inside and out because he played against his Feyenoord team a couple of times.”
