Rangers clear-out starts as major star ‘announces’ Ibrox exit

Ianis Hagi, the Romanian sensation and son of the legendary Gheorghe Hagi, has apparently told Rangers FC that he’s looking to make a move. At 26, having experienced the ups and downs of a career (plagued as it has been by injuries), he’s searching for somewhere else to go (Evans, 2025). His contract is up this summer, and that means he can shop around for new teams to play for—as if he’s some kid in a candy store.

Why would Hagi want to leave? Simple: because he can, and because he’s had a decent season, with three goals and seven assists, but not a good enough season to make him indispensable. Reports indicate that the Rangers aren’t even bothering to offer him an extension. Put another way, it’s like being ghosted by your girlfriend who, at the last moment, decides she’d rather see someone else. And speaking of someone else, rumour has it that clubs like Fenerbahce are interested in Ianis.

But here’s the kicker: Romania’s national team manager, Mircea Lucescu, has also had his say in the matter. He’s publicly expressed his view that Hagi should clear out if he’s to really become a force on the international scene. And if not at Rangers, then where? In recent years, Ianis has been linked with a number of clubs across Europe, from Serie A to La Liga, whose coaches ostensibly think he’s good enough to play for them. So, it’s not just a case of wanting something shiny and new. This could very well be a pivotal moment in the young man’s career.

In the end, whether it’s those family connections making things even more complicated or just the necessity for a change of scenery, it seems remarkably simple to say that Ianis Hagi is on his way out of Rangers. Both father and son appear to have cooled to the idea of playing in Glasgow. Perhaps because of what happened at FCSB, Ianis has a similar affection for a club to which he alone can lay claim. If that’s the case, then this is the story of a young man deciding to pursue his own identity—on or off the pitch.
