FLW's Wrexham fan pundit has given his verdict on the situation surrounding Jon Dadi Bodvarsson
Jon Dadi Bodvarsson made the switch to Wrexham in October after his departure from Bolton Wanderers.
The forward arrived on a short-term deal that will keep him with the League One side until January.
The 32-year-old has so far made three league appearances, including one start, and has yet to contribute a goal or an assist.
As we approach the new year, a decision will need to be made about his long-term viability in Phil Parkinson’s squad.
Wrexham will need to figure out whether it’s worth keeping him beyond his current deal, or if he should be moved on in 2025.
When asked about Bodvarrsson’s future with the club, FLW’s Wrexham fan pundit Liam Grice claimed that keeping wouldn’t be the best use of their resources.
He has highlighted the significant number of options in the squad already as one reason why the Red Dragons should avoid a longer-term deal at this stage.
“Really Bodvarsson’s only been limited to cameo appearances so far because we do have a plethora of options at striker, especially the role he likes to play,” Grice told Football League World.
“We’ve got Ollie Palmer, obviously Bodvarsson himself and Mo Faal and three strikers vying for what is basically one position.
“There’s a lot of competition.
“It’s always good to have backup for any position, but if we include those three, and the fact we’ve got Paul Mullin and Jack Marriott, Elliot Lee can play as a striker as well, as he has done in the last two games, so we do have a lot of players in those positions.
“I’m not really sure, given that if we were to give him a longer contract he’d want quite high wages, it would be the best investment of our resources.”
Wrexham are back in League One after gaining promotion from League Two at the first time of asking last year.
Parkinson’s side will be aiming for another strong finish in the table this campaign, with their sights even set on a potential top six position.
The Welsh outfit currently occupy a top two spot, albeit they have played more games than the likes of Birmingham City and Huddersfield Town.
Given their potential promotion ambitions, it’s imperative that they make the correct calls when it comes to decisions such as the one surrounding Bodvarsson.
Bringing in someone of Bodvarsson’s experience on a short-term deal was a solid idea, and has helped bring some additional cover to the team.
However, he hasn’t proven too useful of a signing so far, and moving him on in January would be sensible given the potential cost of a longer deal.
If Wrexham are going to push for promotion then further additions in the new year will be likely, so focusing their resources on other areas of the team would be wise.
While Bodvarsson brings plenty of experience with him to the side, it’s clear that his impact on the squad hasn’t been what it could’ve been in the past.
