Alan Hutton has urged Everton to prioritise the signing of a new playmaker over Conor Coady at Wolves.

The former Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted while the 28-year-old would be a “leader”, the Toffees need some creativity in their midfield.

As revealed by Football Insider on Thursday (June 17th), prospective new manager Rafael Benitez has given the green light for Coady to be the Toffees’ first signing this summer.

It is understood the Wolves defender is a top target for Everton and has been discussed in talks with Benitez.

However, Hutton has suggested the Toffees already have enough good centre-back options.

He insisted a creative midfielder needed to be the priority instead.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Everton have enough good options at the back, if I’m totally honest.

“I think probably a midfield creator is somewhere that they would maybe look to kind of bolster a little bit.

“Coady, no matter what your think or say about him, he does a job. He’s a leader, he’s commanding and there’s always space for people like that within your squad.

“It really comes down to when the new manager comes in what positions he wants to strengthen.

“Is that going to be the first place for Everton to strengthen? I’m not so sure to be quite honest. We’ll have to wait and see.”

Everton currently have Yerry Mina, Be Godfrey, Mason Holgate and Michael Keane as senior centre-backs.

Coady has missed one Premier League game in three seasons for Wolves.
