James McCarthy would be a “hell of a signing” for Celtic this summer, according to Michael Brown.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Premier League midfielder, who was with McCarthy for a brief spell at Wigan Athletic, has hailed the 29-year-old as a “brilliant” talent with a “great personality”.
McCarthy currently plies his trade for Crystal Palace, having signed from Everton last year.
The player spent six years at Goodison Park, and Brown believes that experience would make him a good asset for the Bhoys.
Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “I think he’s a brilliant footballer.
“I played in that Wigan side when he came and joined. He’s been at Palace, he’s had the odd injury here and there, but he’s played his part. He’s a very experienced player now from his time at Everton. When he came to Wigan he was a bit of an unknown from Hamilton Academical.
“I enjoyed seeing him develop. I’ve watched his career all the way through. He’s a great lad, great personality.
“It would be a hell of a signing if they could get him, that’s for sure.”
McCarthy made 33 Premier League appearances last season, and has a total of 256 English top flight appearances over the course of his career.
The midfielder was initially on the books at Celtic as a youngster, but left the club in 2005 to join Hamilton Academical’s youth system.
In other Celtic news, Darren Bent claims one attacker may have “killed his chances” of a move to Parkhead.
