PSG’s rivalry with Barcelona could prevent deal for Xavi Simons

Paris Saint-Germain’s troubled relationship with Barcelona looks like it could preclude the Catalans from securing one of their targets for the summer; the loan move of Xavi Simons (21).

Simons had been strongly linked with a temporary move to Barcelona a week ago when Mundo Deportivo reported that the attacking midfielder wanted to return to the club where he had developed as an academy player.

It was speculated that there was a clause in the Dutchman’s contract that allowed him to have a significant say in where he would end up on loan and that this would open the door for Barcelona.

However, Sport now writes that it is unlikely that PSG will come to the table if Barcelona are on the other side. Les Parisiens have had slightly less thorny relations with their Catalan rivals in recent years. However, there remains still a mutual antagonism between the two sides which prevents them from wanting to see their talent in a Barcelona shirt.

Sport further writes that while Simons is reluctant to return to the French capital after his loan at RB Leipzig finishes, the PSG manager Luis Enrique and the sporting director Luís Campos envision him as a key part of the project, and remain hopeful that they can convince him to change his mind.
