PSG find themselves in a bit of a quandary over the contract situation of superstar Lionel Messi. The Argentina captain, whose current deal runs out at the end of the season, already has a proposal on the table, but nothing is decided yet.

Contrary to the reports doing rounds that Messi is seeking a contract similar to the terms offered to Kylian Mbappe, we reported before that the veteran forward has made no such request.

At the moment, while everything is still hanging in the air, PSG’s Qatari headquarters in Doha has sent clear instructions to Nasser Al-Khelaifi – president of the club – and Luis Campos – the sporting director – that Messi must be retained at all costs, reports Fernando Polo of Mundo Deportivo.

It must be remembered that PSG have been trying to tie Messi to a new contract since 2022. But with the player occupied in national duty during the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the talks continued to stall.

Amidst all this, Messi’s father and agent, Jorge Messi, had an agreement in principle for his son’s continuity with the French team. Everything was expected to take place after the conclusion of the world event, but talks have since died down.

The situation is creating a bit of a headache for the French champions as it is understood that Barcelona are now in a position to welcome Messi back at Camp Nou.

PSG are in a tricky situation at the moment. The last time they had a face-to-face conversation with Jorge Messi, they expressed their willingness to keep Messi. At the same time, however, they did express that a salary problem might arise with FFP issues looming on the club.

Furthermore, recent reports even suggested that PSG were having second thoughts about renewing Messi, as some section of the fans have turned against the former Barcelona captain and jeered and whistled him this past weekend during the game against Rennes.

But it is now being claimed that PSG officials are under pressure from Doha as the higher authority wants nothing but Messi’s continuity, with Al-Khelaifi and Campos having been told to make it their top objective.
