Paris Saint-Germain owners Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) are reportedly in preliminary talks to acquire a minority stake in Brazilian club Santos, according to L’Equipe.
QSI, a Qatari government-owned investment fund, has been seeking opportunities to expand its football network.
They have acquired a 30% share in Portuguese club Braga and also expressed interest in purchasing Spanish outfit Malaga.
Unfortunately for QSI, Malaga’s relegation to the third tier of Spanish football has dampened their prospects in that particular venture.
Undeterred by the setback, QSI has set its sights on the South American market.
Acquiring a share of Santos, a renowned Sao Paulo-based club, has emerged as an enticing option for the Qataris.
The move would allow them to tap into the vast talent pool of South American football and strengthen their presence in the region.
While QSI pursues its goal of diversifying its portfolio, another intriguing development has unfolded.
Nasser Al Khelaifi, the head of the investment fund, has seemingly opened the door to potential minority investors in PSG.
This decision marks a significant departure from their previous stance of maintaining full ownership of the Ligue 1 leaders since 2011.
The move could attract new investment and inject fresh capital into the club, potentially bolstering PSG’s position in the footballing world.
QSI’s expansion plans extend beyond France, Spain, Portugal and South America.
They have expressed interest in an unnamed Belgian club, demonstrating their commitment to forging global connections within the sport.
Several clubs have implemented the multi-club model over the years. City Football Group (CFG) uses this mode of football club ownership.
They own sister clubs such as Manchester City, New York City FC and Melbourne City FC. CFG has created a global network of talent development and commercial opportunities.
Red Bull have successfully employed this strategy with RB Leipzig, RB Salzburg and other clubs worldwide.
