PREVIEW: Manchester United travel to Fulham in search of a first win of the season

It was a frantic first matchday for both teams, with Fulham rescuing a draw late on against Brighton and a spirited United falling to Arsenal at home. Marco Silva’s men will consider themselves lucky, as Brighton failed to put any of their late chances into the back of the net. As for The Red Devils, following a disastrous last season, their performance on Saturday will inspire them to earn their first win of the season.

Ruben Amorim stated: “We are better, but also because we have different characteristics and we can change that during the game.”

The Cottagers enjoyed the majorityof the ball against Brighton but lacked incision, even with Raúl Jiménez heading the frontline. Rodrigo Muniz saved the day, scoring with one of the last kicks of the game. Academy graduate Joshua King was central to all things positive for Fulham, and Silva will bank on him to produce something worthwhile on Sunday.

Silva said: “It is very important” to start the season well at home and that “the Premier League demands so much from you,” ahead of the game.

Amorim, already under fire since last season, will need to find a win from somewhere to start salvaging his stint. Big money signings such as Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Šeško have shown positive signs against Arsenal. Travels to Craven Cottage are not the easiest, which is why United will need to sharpen up their finishing. A start for Šeško could be beckoning, with Cunha and Mbeumo slotting in the inside forward positions. United scraped a 1-0 win last time at Craven Cottage, courtesy of Lisandro Martínez’s long-range strike. Amorim will hope for a similar solid performance this time round as well.

Midfield Battle

Midfield battles have become synonymous with the modern game, and this match should be no different. Fulham will back themselves, boasting a man mountain in Sander Berge, forming a partnership with Saša Lukić. A solid Cottagers pivot will be matched with a potentially porous United midfield, with captain Bruno Fernandes being played deeper than he was used to last season. The Red Devils have been linked with names such as Angelo Stiller and Lucien Agoumé to fill the midfield, but nothing is advanced as of yet.

Amorim also hasn’t quite worked out how to maximise youngster Kobbie Mainoo’s talents, and the usage of Manuel Ugarte and veteran Casemiro certainly does not bode well for the star academy graduate. A scrappy midfield battle awaits us at Craven Cottage on Sunday.

United’s latest big-money signing, Šeško, brought in from RB Leipzig for an initial sum of £66 million certainly turned a lot of heads this transfer window. This also may signal the end of Rasmus Hojlund’s stint at Old Trafford. Šeško came off the bench against Arsenal and although he did not receive the ball much, there were a couple of off the ball runs that were partly influential.

Šeško’s lethal ball striking and neat hold-up play should surely warrant a start on Sunday for him. As the leading striker of one of the biggest clubs in England, there will be pressure on his shoulders. The Premier League is also a step up from the Bundesliga so it will be interesting to see how this transfer plays out for Manchester United.
