As Liverpool prepares for a high-stakes match against Chelsea this Sunday, David Lynch shared his thoughts on the Blues’ transformation under Enzo Maresca. Speaking with Dave Davis on the Anfield Index podcast, Lynch offered a detailed preview of the upcoming game, analysing Chelsea’s strengths and weaknesses and what Liverpool might expect from Maresca’s side. With both teams showing improvements under new management, this encounter promises to be an intriguing clash of styles.
Since taking over as Chelsea’s manager, Enzo Maresca has brought stability to a side that had previously struggled with inconsistency. Lynch observed that, despite Chelsea’s chaotic transfer strategy, Maresca has managed to build a cohesive unit. He noted, “They seem to be getting there…the team sound sort of stable, more like a top-four contender than we might have expected a season ago.”
Maresca has introduced a more structured playing style, one that relies on disciplined defending and a patient build-up from the back. Lynch commended Maresca’s work, highlighting the gradual improvements in Chelsea’s gameplay. However, he also pointed out some lingering vulnerabilities, particularly in defence. “They’re defensively a little bit questionable, and Liverpool have got goal scorers who can exploit that,” Lynch remarked. For Liverpool, this means opportunities may arise if they can disrupt Chelsea’s build-up play.

One player Lynch singled out was Cole Palmer, who has emerged as a standout performer for Chelsea this season. Lynch was impressed by Palmer’s ability to impact games, describing him as “the best player in the Premier League at the moment.” While acknowledging Palmer’s individual brilliance, Lynch suggested that Liverpool could capitalise on Chelsea’s occasional lapses in defensive shape, particularly if they press high and force turnovers.

Chelsea’s midfield, anchored by Enzo Fernández, provides a strong backbone for Maresca’s team. Fernández’s composure on the ball and ability to dictate play make him a key figure in Chelsea’s system. Lynch explained that Liverpool would need to be wary of Fernández’s ability to control the game’s tempo. However, with Liverpool’s pressing style under Arne Slot, the Reds may be able to unsettle Fernández and disrupt Chelsea’s rhythm. “Slot’s pressing game could make life difficult for players like Fernández,” Lynch noted.
Under Slot, Liverpool has embraced an aggressive pressing style designed to win the ball high up the pitch. Lynch believes that Liverpool will look to exploit Chelsea’s back line, especially given their tendency to play out from the back. He explained, “Anyone who tries to build up in the way that Chelsea do…Slot likes pressing, and it’s absolutely going to be one of the focuses for Liverpool.”
Chelsea’s build-up play may leave them vulnerable to quick counter-attacks if Liverpool can intercept passes in midfield. Lynch highlighted that Liverpool’s front line, including Gravenberch and Mac Allister, would need to maintain a high level of intensity to press Chelsea effectively. This strategy could force Chelsea into mistakes and create scoring opportunities for Liverpool’s attackers.

Chelsea’s defence will be under pressure to handle Liverpool’s dynamic attack, especially if the Reds can establish a high tempo from the outset. Lynch suggested that while Chelsea has improved defensively, they remain prone to errors, particularly when faced with a high-pressing team like Liverpool. “If Liverpool get a couple in quick succession, they could absolutely batter Chelsea,” he observed.
At the same time, Maresca’s team boasts attacking threats that Liverpool must be prepared to contain. Palmer’s creativity and Fernández’s distribution make Chelsea dangerous, particularly if Liverpool’s press is bypassed. Lynch emphasised the importance of Liverpool maintaining defensive discipline, as an overcommitted press could leave them exposed. He concluded, “Chelsea has players who can really hurt Liverpool, so it’s not one they can take lightly.”
As Liverpool and Chelsea prepare for their clash on Sunday, both teams are eager to prove themselves under new management. Lynch’s analysis underscores the significance of the battle between Slot’s pressing tactics and Maresca’s structured build-up. For Liverpool, exploiting Chelsea’s defensive vulnerabilities will be key, while for Chelsea, navigating Liverpool’s high press will be a challenge. This matchup is set to test both managers’ strategies and could play a pivotal role in shaping their respective campaigns this season.
