Gtech Community Stadium forms the backdrop for a Premier League London derby encounter as West Ham United look to strengthen their grip on top-flight football when they take on Brentford on Sunday.

Brentford suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to top-four hopefuls Liverpool last time out. But the scoreline flattered their performance, with the Reds guilty of squandering several goalscoring chances.

The Bees have won just three of their last ten league games, but they are guaranteed to secure a higher league finish than they managed last term, regardless of what happens in their remaining fixtures.

However, Thomas Frank will be keen on signing out the campaign with a bang and would hope his side crank it up a notch against their struggling neighbours.

West Ham are just one win away from hitting the 40-point mark, with seven points separating them from the drop zone, but a draw in Sunday’s encounter will be enough to secure their top-flight status.

David Moyes’ side will no doubt be prioritising their continental ambitions with one foot in the Europa Conference League final but will also hope for another positive result following last weekend’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United.

With nothing left to fight for this season except maintaining their place in the top half of the Premier League table, Brentford will look to continue their impressive form over West Ham.

They have won five of their last seven league games against the Hammers in a run stretching back to 1953 (D1, L1) while winning all three of their top-flight meetings with Moyes’ side.

Brentford have struggled with the 2022/23 campaign in its home stretch, losing four of their last seven league games (W2, D1).

However, their home form should be enough to boost their morale ahead of Sunday’s showdown, with the Bees losing just one of their last 13 league games on home turf (W6, D6).

West Ham have endured an appalling domestic season, having spent most of it battling relegation. But they could still earn a fairytale end to the dramatic campaign with European glory within reach.

They will be looking to secure back-to-back league victories for only the second time this term, having previously done so back in October.

However, their form in the London derbies leaves little to be desired, with Moyes’ side losing seven of their last eight matches against teams from the English capital (W1), including four of five this season.

While the Hammers have never lost as many as five such games in a single season, they will need to repeat their FA Cup success over Brentford on Sunday to avoid being on the wrong end of history.

Brentford vs West Ham United Potential Line-ups

Brentford (4-3-3): David Raya; Aaron Hickey, Ben Mee, Ethan Pinnock, Rico Henry; Joshua Dasilva, Vitaly Janelt, Mathias Jensen; Kevin Schade, Ivan Toney, Bryan Mbeumo.

West Ham United (4-2-3-1): Lucasz Fabianski; Ben Johnson, Kurt Zouma, Nayef Aguerd, Emerson Palmieri; Declan Rice, Tomas Soucek; Jarrod Bowen, Manuel Lanzini, Pablo Fornals; Danny Ings.

We Say: Brentford 2-1 West Ham United

Both sides are evenly matched heading into Sunday’s showdown, so a thrilling, end-to-end encounter is expected in west London.

However, with West Ham more focused on their European ambitions, Brentford’s home form should give them the upper hand in what should prove to be a closely fought contest.
