Our Premier League Team of the Week from the weekend action, featuring names from Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Brighton.

Goalkeeper: Emiliano Martinez – Aston Villa

Came up big when his side needed him late on. Martinez’s brilliant save from Antoine Semenyo secured a seventh clean sheet of the season and a vital win for Aston Villa. The Argentine’s intervention was the highlight of a solid performance, in which he commanded his penalty box to relieve Bournemouth pressure.

Right-back: Daniel Munoz – Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace’s resident road-runner was crucial to a first win at Tottenham in 28 years. The Colombian charged forward from wing-back with intent, causing Djed Spence problems all afternoon. He was central to the opener after racing clear to tee up Eberechi Eze, his ninth goal involvement of the Premier League campaign.

Centre-back: Michael Keane – Everton

Michael Keane often finds a way of forcing his way back in at Everton and impressed on his first league start in six months. In for the injured James Tarkowski and Jake O’Brien, he was reliable defensively and marked his return with a bullet header at the back post.

Centre-back: Jan Bednarek – Southampton

Southampton’s stifling of Manchester City certainly ruffled the feathers of their visitors. Jan Bednarek was central to a game plan that led to some sour grapes from the Citizens, racking up a mammoth 13 clearances and winning 5/6 defensive duels in the goalless draw. Several sides could do worse than snap up the centre-back this summer, who has a relegation release clause of just £6m.

Left-back: Dan Burn – Newcastle

Newcastle took a giant step towards Champions League football with a 2-0 win over top-five rivals Chelsea. Dan Burn was colossal in the victory at St James’ Park, winning headers, crashing into challenges, and dealing with the threat of Pedro Neto and Cole Palmer.

The 33-year-old is playing the best football of his career this campaign. What a season he is having.

Midfield: Mats Wieffer – Brighton

Arguably his best performance in a Brighton shirt. The Dutchman was everywhere in Brighton’s win at Wolves, equalling a club record for tackles made in a Premier League game. After taking time to settle, Brighton are beginning to see the best of the summer signing, whose tenacious work this weekend helped keep the Seagulls’ chase for Europe alive.

Midfield: Amadou Onana – Aston Villa

Aston Villa needed Amadou Onana to step up this weekend, following the blow of losing Youri Tielemans to injury. Tielemans has been arguably the club’s Player of the Season, but Onana imposed himself on the win at Bournemouth in his own way. The Belgian broke up the play excellently and helped Villa find control on the south coast.

Midfield: Morgan Gibbs-White – Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest’s hopes of Champions League football were dented after a draw with Leicester City, though the result has ensured European football will return to the City Ground for the first time in 30 years. Morgan Gibbs-White delivered two moments of top quality in the 2-2 draw. First, he glanced home an excellent header to equalise, before a peach of a cross found Chris Wood to head home. He’s had better games, but delivered two important moments.

Right-wing: Bryan Mbeumo – Brentford

Like Gibbs-White, Mbeumo has performed better this season but provided the quality when required for Brentford. The Bees have climbed into eighth – a position that could lead to European football – after a 1-0 win at Ipswich Town. A great set-piece delivery was met magnificently by Kevin Schade for the winner. It’s now 25 goals and assists in the Premier League for Mbeumo this season, only two players have managed more.

Left-wing: Eberechi Eze – Crystal Palace

The star of the show as Crystal Palace picked apart a much-changed Spurs side. Eze put the finishing touch on two terrific counters for Palace, who were well worth their win in North London. He swept home Daniel Munoz’s cross for the opener, before starting and finishing a flowing move from back to front. It’s 12 goals for the campaign for Eze, the best return of his Palace career.

Forward: Ollie Watkins – Aston Villa

Ollie Watkins appears to have the bit between his teeth after a spell out of the side. Watkins was the match-winner at Bournemouth, with his delicate touch the difference. A handful all game, he worked hard to chase down lost causes and bring others into play. His 75th league goal for Villa makes him their leading scorer of the Premier League era.
