Crystal Palace announced on Monday that Robert "Woody" Johnson, owner of the NFL's New York Jets, has taken over the shares previously held by Eagle Football Holdings, the group owned by John Textor.

The deal paves the way for Palace to take part in next season’s Europa League.

In an official statement, the club confirmed that the American businessman has acquired the 43% stake formerly held by Textor - who is also president of Lyon and Botafogo.

Palace noted that the agreement is still subject to approval from both the Premier League and the Women’s Super League, but added that they don’t expect any issues.

According to reports, Johnson has paid around £190 million for the shares, which Textor originally bought for £87.5 million in 2021.

The move clears up a potential conflict with UEFA rules, which prohibit two clubs under the same ownership from competing in the same European competition.

Both Palace and Lyon had qualified for the Europa League - Palace by winning the FA Cup - so Textor’s exit allows the Eagles to take their place in next season’s tournament.
