Article image:Premier League Team of the 2017/18 Season

It’s been a brilliant season in the Premier League and as is traditional at this time of the year, here are the 11 players who’ve been the standout performers over the course of the campaign.

So behold, in a very unfashionable 4-4-2 formation, our Team of the Season, along with a substitutes bench for those who didn’t quite make the cut …

Goalkeeper – David de Gea

The Manchester United man has once again been the best goalkeeper in the country this year and it’s difficult to make a case against him being the best in the world. Who knows where his team might have finished without him this season.

Right back – Kyle Walker

Eyebrows were raised at Manchester City’s decision to splash out £50m on Walker last season but the England defender has been one of the signings of the season and a key cog in Pep Guardiola’s free flowing, title winning team.

Centre back – Nicolás Otamendi

The Argentine was not just one of the best players in the Premier League this season, but possibly the most improved too. Gone were the rash challenges and positional indiscipline of previous years and in came an imperious rock whose calmness in possession played a big role in his side’s build-up play.

Centre back – Davinson Sánchez

To come into a new league at the age of 21 and perform as well as Sánchez has done is no mean feat, and just imagine how good the Colombian might be once he has a couple more years of Premier League experience under his belt.

Left back – Andrew Robertson

You’ll do well to find a better use of £8 million anywhere in the world than Liverpool’s signing of Andy Robertson from Hull City last season. It took the Scot a little while to establish himself in the Reds team but now he’s one of the first names on Jürgen Klopp’s team-sheet. He’s still only 24 too, and seems like a thoroughly decent bloke.

Midfield – Kevin De Bruyne

The best player in the best team in the country can consider himself hugely unlucky to have missed out on the Premier League’s individual end of season awards, but De Bruyne established himself as one of the world’s best all-round footballers this season and he will surely only improve in the coming years.

Midfield – Christian Eriksen

The Premier League is blessed with a number of fine playmakers yet Eriksen would walk into any team in the country, if not any team in Europe. The Dane made Spurs tick and was a joy to watch every single week this season, with that stunning strike at Stamford Bridge being one of many highlights.

Midfield – David Silva

Manchester City’s diminutive bald magician is one of the finest players to grace the Premier League and if anything, he seems to be improving with age. Silva is a footballer you might tell your grandchildren about one day and his performances this season were all the more impressive considering the personal trauma he had to endure off the field.

Midfield – Raheem Sterling

Three years on from his controversial move from Liverpool, Sterling finally got his hands on the Premier League trophy he joined Manchester City to win and racked up the best scoring season of his career with a thoroughly impressive 18 league goals. That’s not a bad way to silence your critics at all.

Forward – Harry Kane

The England striker wasn’t able to scoop an unprecedented third consecutive Golden Boot, but it still wasn’t a bad season for Kane at all. 30 league goals is a very decent return, and the 24-year-old will be hoping to make his mark at his first ever World Cup this summer.

Forward – Mohamed Salah

The Player of the Season, the signing of the season and a striker who was literally unplayable at times during his first campaign at Anfield. The Egyptian King really has been a revelation and the £36.9m Liverpool spent on signing him from Roma looks like an absolute bargain in hindsight. Just wow.
