When you’re as good as Leon Bailey, you only need 21 minutes to make an impression.

Bailey was one of several impressive signings made by Aston Villa over the summer but took until this past weekend to really show the Premier League what he is all about.

Replacing Matty Targett on 61 minutes, the Jamaica international was instantaneously at the heart of the action and helped see the Midlands outfit go 2-0 up just nine minutes into his home debut.

A delicious corner from the right by Bailey was headed into his own net by Lucas Digne to double the Villains advantage but it was what happened seven minutes later that will live long in the memory.

A stunning outside of the right foot pass from Danny Ings found Bailey in space down the left-hand side.

And despite some pressure from the onrushing Ben Godfrey, Bailey waited for the ball to bounce up inside the area and delivered a sweet left-footed strike past Asmir Begović into the back of the net.

It sent Villa Park into raptures and showed just what the 24-year-old can offer to Dean Smith’s side this season, despite having to limp off with a quad injury just moments later.

If you have been a regular Bundesliga-watcher over the past couple of seasons you’ll be well aware of Bailey’s astonishing pace and calmness in front of goal.

And it’s a type of game that almost seems hand-picked for the laissez faire, attack-at-all-costs attitude of the English top-flight.

After coming through youth football in Austria and Slovenia and early professional terms in Belgium with Genk, it’s been a long road to the Premier League for Bailey.

But it’s one he’s ready to take in his considerably pacy stride.

“It means so much to me, to accomplish what I did in the 21 minutes. My family was here and the fans chanting my name when I came on. It is such an amazing feeling. I feel I have welcomed myself here as a Villa player,” he told reporters after the game.

A new Villa hero has been born.
