Norwich boosted their survival hopes when they ended Claudio Ranieri’s time in charge of Watford with a comprehensive 3-0 win at Vicarage Road on Friday night.

Dean Smith’s side jumped out of the relegation zone for the first time this season thanks to an unlikely source.

Should a Premier League forward be considered an unlikely source? Perhaps, in the case of Josh Sargent.

The 21-year-old has struggled to make an impact since completing his move from Werder Bremen for a reported fee of around £8m in August.

There had been no goals and no assists in 18 appearances until Friday with the American international

Primarily, Sargent has operated on the right of a 4-3-3 and has been more proficient in hustling and harrying his opponents rather than getting in positions to stick the ball in the back of the net.

But there was the open goal miss against Brighton as Canaries supporters may have been beginning to wonder when it was going to happen for their number 24.

It has happened now as the goal drought was put to the sword – and in some style.

Sargent sent the away end into hysterics when he gave his side the lead in the 51st minute with a remarkable piece of improvisation, as Teemu Pukki’s cross landed behind him before he produced a ‘scorpion kick’ to bounce the ball off the bar and into the back of the net.

What a way to break your Premier League duck, and what’s that saying about London (or east Anglian) buses? A second goal was to follow 23 minutes later.

This time he combined with Milot Rashica, with his former Werder Bremen teammate finding him with a deep cross at the back post and Sargent there to beat Hassane Kamara to the ball and power a header that Alan Shearer would’ve been happy with into the back of the net.

It has taken half a season but Sargent has contributed when it mattered most, helping to demolish a relegation rival in a six-pointer.

Speaking to the club website about his remarkable first goal post-match, he said: “Not much went through my head, it was just instinct to do that, so it was a good finish.

“It’s huge for us. Getting two wins in a row is massive for the guys and the confidence.”

Friday night could be pivotal for Smith’s side and perhaps now Sargent is about to really get going on these shores.
