Aston Villa are ready to demand £40 million for Emiliano Martinez this summer amid interest from Manchester United.

The Red Devils have begun sizing up a swoop for Martinez after first-choice shot-stopper Andre Onana tore his hamstring and was ruled out of the side’s pre-season fixtures. He is, however, expected to return in time for United hosting Arsenal on the Premier League’s opening day on August 16.

Even still, United are considering whether to continue with Onana, who’s accumulated a catalogue of costly errors between the sticks, or invest in a more proven replacement in the form of the ‘world-class’ Argentine.

United plan to ramp up Emiliano Martinez pursuit

According to the Daily Mail, United’s potential pursuit of Martinez is ‘expected to play out over the coming weeks’. They held talks as recently as last weekend over the prospect of adding him to Ruben Amorim’s ranks on loan, but there is an acceptance that Villa, who have the veteran tied down to a deal until 2029, would be entirely uninterested in facilitating such a deal.

As a result, INEOS must decide if meeting the 32-year-old’s £40m valuation will actually be worthwhile in the long run.

There’s no denying that Martinez is one of the best in his position across Europe – he also has the accolades to prove it, being a two-time winner of both the Yashin Trophy and The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper award.

How does Martinez feel about the prospective move?

In the meantime, it’s been claimed by Fabrizio Romano that Martinez is waiting on United’s call this summer, having now set his sights on an Old Trafford move after five years with Villa.

In the event a transfer did materialise, the Reds would then have the task of finding a suitor for Onana just two years after they forked out £47m to sign him from Inter Milan.
