This might look like an April Fool’s prank but we can assure you it isn’t.

Lionel Messi is in scintillating form at the moment. Nothing new there really.

But Pope Francis has refuted suggestions that the Barcelona superstar is a superhuman deity, and he would know.

In an interview with Argentine outlet La Sexta over the weekend, the Pope was asked whether his fellow countryman Messi could be God, and here’s what he had to say

“People can say he is God, just as they may say ‘I adore you’, but only God can be worshipped,” said Pope Francis.

“Those are expressions from people. ‘This is a God with the ball on the field’ is a popular way for someone to express themselves.

“Of course, he is very good, but he isn’t God.”

Glad we’ve cleared that one up.
