Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba is said to be ‘excited’ by the club’s direction, although a new contract may not materialise any time soon amid speculation over a potential switch to Paris Saint-Germain.

The 28-year-old is once again facing an uncertain future at Old Trafford, having previously spent a succession of transfer windows being linked with an exit from the club.

Five years into his second spell with the Red Devils, the World Cup winner remains a polarising figure among the club’s support, albeit he enjoyed perhaps his best campaign to date last time out and followed that up with a string of impressive displays at Euro 2020.

The Frenchman currently has just a year remaining on his existing deal, leaving the possibility that he could depart for nothing for the second time in his United career in a years’ time or perhaps even be sold before the August deadline amid reported interest from PSG.

That being said, an extended stay in Manchester is not off the cards, Sky Sports reporting that the midfielder is ‘excited’ by the club’s current direction and can ‘see a long-term future at United’, although that may still not lead to a new deal any time soon.

The report suggests that even if he does not agree to a new deal by the end of the window, it doesn’t necessarily mean that he won’t sign an extension at all, with the club understanding that the player’s current contract situation means he can control his own future.

Pogba’s representatives are said to be in continuing talks with the club over a new deal, although Mauricio Pochettino’s side are also interested in a deal this summer.

The Ligue 1 club have already added former Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum to their ranks, as well as Gianluigi Donnarumma, Sergio Ramos and Achraf Hakimi, with Pogba potentially set to add to an already mouthwatering squad.

As the report outlines, however, the former Juventus star may be inclined to stay where he is for now, leaving the possibility open to a new deal at United, or letting his contract run down so that he can potentially seal a switch to one of Europe’s cash-strapped elite in 12 months time – notably long time suitors Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Should he not agree a new deal, he would be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with European clubs as early as 1 January 2022.

The player is, however, said to be happy where he is and has been impressed by the recent high profile signings of Jadon Sancho and Les Blues colleague Raphael Varane, while he is also said to have an excellent relationship with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
