FIFA Club World Cup, Semi-final, 09/07/25
PSG will face Chelsea FC in Sunday’s Club World Cup final after putting on a devastating masterclass against Real Madrid. Fabian Ruiz, Ousmane Dembélé and Gonçalo Ramos all found the back of Thibaut Courtois’ net.
PSG’s sleek and relentless counter-pressing was in full flow early on as Les Parisiens found it all too easy to slice open a disjointed Real Madrid side. Thibaut Courtois was alert to prevent Fabian Ruiz and Nuno Mendes from scoring with two back-to-back world-class saves. But the Belgian goalkeeper was then let down by both his centre-backs.
Raul Asencio, who filled in for the suspended Dean Huijsen, made a huge mess of Désiré Doué’s wayward cross and Ousmane Dembélé smelled blood. The France international was brought down to the ground by the onrushing Courtois, but the ball kindly fell to Ruiz, who fired into the empty net. Three minutes later, Antonio Rüdiger outdid Asencio with an even bigger defensive mistake, cracking under pressure and losing possession to Dembélé, who beat Courtois with power.
PSG could have sat back and let Real Madrid wear themselves out in trying to restore parity. But the Champions League winners are a different breed. Instead, Les Parisiens kept hurting Los Merengues. The brilliant Dembélé combined with Achraf Hakimi for a light-speed counter-attack and the Moroccan only had to feed Ruiz in the box to make it 3-0.
In the second half, PSG continue to control proceedings, although their grip on the game loosened, which allowed Real Madrid to creep through in PSG’s half. Alongside club captain Marquinhos, Lucas Beraldo held firm. As PSG were out of sight, Luis Enrique could give a rest to his star players and none of Xabi Alonso’s substitutions altered the course of the game.
On the contrary, PSG subs piled more misery on the Basque. Bradley Barcola fed Gonçalo Ramos, who emphatically turned and shot for PSG’s fourth. The Portuguese fell to his knees to pay tribute to his fellow countryman from Portugal, the late Diogo Jota. PSG were just a class apart from Real Madrid.
Gianluigi Donnarumma – 6
Nuno Mendes – 7
Lucas Beraldo – 7
Marquinhos – 6
Achraf Hakimi – 8
The Moroccan right-back is in a league of his own, marshalling the right side with authority and breaking away with devastating speed and precision to carve open Madrid’s left flank. One of his trademark bursts forward led to Ruiz’s second goal.
Fabián Ruiz – 8
The former Napoli midfielder has been an instrumental presence in the first half, dictating the pace of the game and getting on the scoresheet twice. He fired into an empty net and applied the finishing touch of a brilliant team move.
João Neves – 6
Vitinha – 7
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia – 6
Ousmane Dembélé – 8
The in-form France international centre-forward was simply heavily involved in all of PSG’s first three goals tonight. Even a centre-back as experienced as Antonio Rüdiger lost his temper, and the ball, in dealing with Dembélé. The Frenchman’s Ballon d’Or credentials are at an all-time high.
Désiré Doué – 6
Raul Asencio – 2
Antonio Rüdiger – 3
Federico Valverde – 3
Kylian Mbappé – 4
