Anthony Lopes, 6 – Little to do for long periods but made a key save from Kevin Gameiro one-on-one just after half time and did well to close down Diallo late on.

Malo Gusto, 7 – Defended sharply throughout and was a persistent outlet on the right, keen to take on his opposite number. Despite being just a teenager he looks assured, confident and ready to make the step up to the first team regular. Unlucky to concede a late penalty for hand ball.

Bruno Guimarães, 8 – Positive in his passing and imposed himself on the game while adding a couple moments of real skill. His lofted long ball set up the opener for Dembélé and he should have had another assist for Paquetá late on after an astute dinked through ball.

Thiago Mendes, 5

Xherdan Shaqiri, 6 – A bustling debut, linked well with his fellow forwards throughout before his cross set up the second. Made one crucial interception to prevent an almost certain goal on the counter in the first half too. Not far off 7.

Houssem Aouar, 5 – Intermittent impact on the game overall despite some neat interplay in the second half. Lacked consistent creative spark and wasted some promising openings while being outshone by Bruno but did get a neat assist for Paquetá to make it 3-0 late on.

Karl Toko-Ekambi, 4 – A typical Toko-Ekambi performance of recent months – hardworking with some good movement and pace but ultimately frustrating as his touch let him down on occasion in wasting some useful openings.

Moussa Dembélé, 7 – Provided a glorious finish early in the first half, chesting down Bruno’s long ball and spinning to fire into the top corner. Captain on the night he was often a threat on the shoulder of Strasbourg centre-backs despite a quite second half overall.

Lucas Perrin, 3 – At sea for the first two goals. After some showing promise when breaking through at Marseille during an injury crisis in the 19/20 season he seems to have regressed having been oddly completely out of the picture since then. At 22, this move may have come too late.

Alexander Djiku, 6 – One brilliant interception early in the second half and, despite some lethargic defending around him, posted a solid personal display.

Maxime Le Marchand, 4

Anthony Caci, 5 – A productive first half from wing-back in providing a willing outlet and taking up some dangerous positions but faded after half time.

Sanjin Prcić, 4

Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, 4

Adrien Thomasson, 3 – Very disappointing display, anonymous for long stretches and looked to be flagging late on. No real impact.

Ludovic Ajorque, 4

Kevin Gameiro, 3 – Took up some useful positions during first half counters but failed to capitalise and squandered his one real chance of the game when clean through on Lopes’ goal as his weak effort was saved too easily.
