Backers of the European Super League have resurrected plans to launch an updated version of the failed project from 2021.

According to the an announcement made from A22, the sister company of the European Super League, the new format would see between 60 to 80 teams compete in a multi-division competition which would replace UEFA’s Champions League.

No clubs would be permanent members (one of the criticisms of the ill-fated first Super League plans) and would contest a minimum of 14 games per season.

A22 go on to state that detailed discussions have reportedly been held with over 50 clubs across the continent on how the new competition could assist with financial problems being faced by many.

However, in terms of the structure of the new competition, there is no indication on who would make up the initial 60-80 teams or how a relegation-like format would work to allow new clubs to enter.

The main clubs backing the project, as with the initial ESL, are Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona as well as Juventus.

That original Super League has been involved in a lengthy legal battle with UEFA for much of the past two years and in December of 2022, the European Court of Justice’s advocate general advised the court to side heavily with the governing body.

Although those suggestions are not binding for judges in the European Court of Justice, it is generally adhered to and on this occasion, seems set follow a similar suit.
