Les Monégasques cruised to a dominant 4-1 victory over Clermont Foot, sinking Ligue 1's bottom side closer to relegation to Ligue 2 BKT. Adi Hütter's side took the lead only 16 minutes into the game through Takumi Minamino, with the Japanese international picking up the ball after Caufriez failed to clear the ball in the box, and curled past Mory Diaw to open proceedings at Stade Louis II (16').
Yet Ligue 1's bottom side showed enough fight to get back into the game through Muhammed Cham, after Virginuis managed to collect the ball on the right side of the box and put in a cross into the Austrian, who burst through the defence and finished calmly (35').
Embolo, Minamino, and Ben Yedder on fire
The two sides would only be on equal standing for two minutes, before Breel Embolo put the Monégasque side back in front with his first goal since returning from injury. The Swiss international scored with a right footed strike after some good work between Ben Yedder and Takumi Minamino (37').
After the half-time break, Monaco would go on to further dominate the clash, as Wissam Ben Yedder grabbed his first goal of the evening by profiting off a mistake from Pelmard's missed tackle and poking home for his 14th goal of the season (57'). The Frenchman would then complete his brace in the final ten minutes of the match, being fed through one-on-one by Minamino and finishing low past Miaw to put the result out of sight (87'). A penalty was ruled out for Clermont in the dying seconds, but it would have been a mere consolation, as Ligue 1's bottom side now stare relegation to Ligue 2 BKT in the face.
