Everton are looking to avoid a hat-trick of relegation battles in their forthcoming Premier League campaign.
But will Goodison Park be spared another scrap for survival in what could be its last full season of existence?
In: Arnau Danjuma (Villarreal, loan), Ashley Young (Aston Villa, free)
Out: Moise Kean (Juventus, £24.1m), Ellis Simms (Coventry City, £8m), Ishé Samuels-Smith (Chelsea, £4m), Niels Nkounkou (Saint-Étienne, £1.7m), Andros Townsend, Tom Davies, Yerry Mina, Asmir Begović (all released),
Transfer balance: +£24.1m
Evertonians headed into this summer fearing that Jordan Pickford would be their next player sacrificed to satisfy the Premier League’s financial fair play demands.
His late save in last season’s final day win over Bournemouth was the difference between the Toffees avoiding a first campaign in the doldrums of The Championship.
A repeat of the England number-one’s exploits last year will go a long way in ensuring that Goodison Park’s lengthy top-flight stay is preserved for another season at least.
The arrival of Arnaut Danjuma on a season-long loan and 38-year-old free agent Ashley Young continues to lay bare Everton’s ongoing financial problems. Dele Alli also returns from his loan spell with Besiktas.
But if there is a manager is best equipped to navigate the difficulties of excelling in the Premier League on stringent resources, they have the ideal candidate in Sean Dyche.
With a full pre-season under his belt, the ex-Burnley boss will be intent on replicating the early part of his Goodison reign when organisation and impetus were belatedly restored.
Anything other than another nervy relegation battle will be seen as progress after two seasons which have left relations between the club and its fanbase increasingly fractured.
(4-5-1) — Pickford; Coleman, Tarkowski, Keane, Young; Danjuma, Iwobi, Doucouré, Gueye, McNeil; Calvert-Lewin.
