Burnley are back and they are unrecognisable.
From Sean Dyche to Pep’s prodigy, the Clarets have returned to the Premier League off the back of a brand new identity. But how will it stand up against the very best?
In: Zeki Amdouni (Basel, £15.6m), James Trafford (Man City, £15m), Jordan Beyer (Borussia M’Gladbach, £11.5m), Dara O’Shea (West Brom, £7m), Luca Koleosho (Espanyol, £2.6m), Nathan Redmond (Besiktas, free), Lawrence Vigouroux (Leyton Orient, free), Jacob Bruun Larsen (Hoffenheim, loan)
Out: Ashley Barnes (Norwich, free), Bailey Peacock-Farrell (AGF, loan)
Transfer balance: -£51.7m
With seven goals and eight assists last season, Brownhill provided significant threat from midfield as Burnley drove to the Championship title.
Can he repeat the trick in the top flight?
Goals are so often the issue for promoted sides, or for teams battling against relegation in general, and Vincent Kompany will be looking to Brownhill to offer an additional threat if and when Burnley’s forwards aren’t firing.
The midfielder only provided two goals and three assists in his last Premier League campaign (and only to date) as Burnley were relegated but he has offered end product at Bristol City and now Burnley in the Championship. Now is the time to show he can do the same in the top flight.
The opposition, more than anything else.
Burnley had the highest possession and scored the most goals in the Championship last season. They conceded the fewest goals and faced the fewest shots. Only Swansea completed more passes.
All of that is about to change drastically.
How will Kompany’s men do without the ball and under intense pressure? Can they keep teams out? How will they create chances when they see less possession?
As of right now, some of last season’s stars — Ian Maatsen and Nathan Tella — are not Burnley players with their loan spells over, raising more questions on his future.
