Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly is reportedly ready to snub interest from the likes of Liverpool to sign for Manchester United in the summer window.

The powerful defender has been linked with a move from Naples for some time with many of Europe’s biggest clubs speculated to be interested in him.

According to Marca, via the Express, however, it is Manchester United that is set to win the race for him, with the report claiming that the defender wants to play under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Koulibaly is certainly a player that many watchers of European football will be aware of given his prominence for Napoli in Serie A and the Champions League.

He’s obviously a quality footballer, with transfermarkt valuing him at £54m – a lot of money for a player that is nearly 30.

And, it appears, United are in the pound seats to get him at the moment.

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

He’s obviously a good player but the Reds probably won’t be too fussed if he does end up moving to Manchester United.

Given his age and likely cost, he doesn’t seem that good a fit to what the Reds normally look for in the transfer window and, though there’s an obvious need for a new defender at L4 at the moment, it’s hard to make a case for Koulibaly being the right option.

A good player, make no mistake, but one that just doesn’t seem the right fit for the Reds and their long-term planning.
