Today’s photo of the day goes back to the 1972 Scottish Cup Final, when an excellent Celtic team thrashed Hibernian 6-1 at Hampden Park.

The result capped a superb season, in which Celtic won the League and Scottish Cup double, lost in the League Cup Final and exited the European Cup at the Semi-Final stage (on penalties against Inter Milan after two 0-0 draws).

A look at the team line up from the Scottish Cup Final reveals how much class the Hoops had at their disposal. Certainly, in such scintillating form, they could have given Johan Cruyff’s Ajax a run for their money in the European Cup Final.

Over 106,000 fans turned up at Hampden Park for the match. Jock Stein left Bobby Lennox out, but there was no shortage of talent on the pitch:

Williams, Craig, Brogan, Murdoch, McNeill, Connelly, Johnstone, Deans, Macari, Dalglish, Callaghan. Substitute – Lennox.

Dixie Deans was the star of the show, scoring a hat-trick. He did the same against Hibs in the 1974 League Cup Final, writing his name into the history books as the first and only player (to date) to have scored hat-tricks in both a Scottish Cup and League Cup Final!

Beyond Dixie’s monumental contribution, Billy McNeill scored and Lou Macari bagged a brace.
