In a recent interview, ex-Premier League centre-forward Kevin Phillips backed Newcastle United to move in for Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Phillips said,

“Calvert-Lewin is a big powerful striker and I’m sure he’d be compared to the Alan Shearer if he went there.

“He would have to go some to be half as good as Shearer though. That is the toughest part about playing up front for Newcastle. You get compared to Shearer straight away. You have to get over that.

“Young players don’t worry about that kind of pressure these days though. I think Calvert-Lewin would take it on his shoulders.

“He has shown at Everton and England that he is improving all of the time. He is a striker who has a bit of everything.

“I think Newcastle could get a good six or seven years out of him. It would be a good investment. He could turn out to be a great signing for them.”

Calvert-Lewin’s Injury-Ravaged Spell At Goodison Park This Season

The English marksman has endured an injury-plagued start to this campaign as he has missed a lot of games for the Toffees in recent months because of a fractured toe. However, Calvert-Lewin deserves a lot of credit for netting three goals in three appearances for the Merseyside outfit this season in all competitions.

The 24-year-old has caught the eye by averaging 1.0 interceptions, 0.7 clearances, 3.7 shots and 1.0 key passes per game in the Premier League. However, he has been a bit sloppy when distributing possession deep inside the opponent’s half, as evidenced by his pass success rate of 66.7% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).

Will Calvert-Lewin Be A Good Signing For Newcastle United?

Calvert-Lewin can use his powerful 1.89m frame to outjump the opposition and win some crucial 50-50 aerial duels for his side. He has proven his worth as a composed finisher over the past 18 months but has to overcome his recent injury problems if he wants to taste success at the highest level.

The Sheffield-born talent can even contribute by picking up a few assists in the final third and is always willing to track back and help his teammates out at the back if needed. However, as mentioned earlier, Calvert-Lewin needs to improve his accuracy when passing the ball to his teammates in and around the opponent’s penalty area.

The England international has what it takes to become a future star at St. James’ Park, so the Magpies would be wise to listen to Phillips’ advice by sealing a move for him in the not-too-distant future.

Calvert-Lewin is an exceptional striker who will undoubtedly improve the quality of Newcastle‘s frontline. Furthermore, he could go on to form a lethal attacking partnership with Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson at the Tyneside club in the coming seasons. Thus, Calvert-Lewin will be an excellent signing for the Magpies to pursue next year.
