Debate often rages over whether Cristiano Ronaldo or Messi own that title, with legends like Pelé and Diego Maradona also among those considered.
However, Coutinho believes his Barcelona teammate earns that accolade, claiming it is an “honour” to play with him every week.
“Messi is the best in the world and I must say he’s the best in the history in my opinion,” he told Mundo Deportivo.
“Everything he does is so unpredictable I’m thrilled for him that he scored twice tonight. It’s an honour to play with him.
“What he gives us going forward with his goals, with his assists, there is nobody like him.”
The 31-year-old has been a standout performer for Barcelona this season, scoring 10 goals and assisting four in 11 appearances.
